TOROA VILLAGE MISSION
STAGE 3

COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTRE

After many years of trying, the Toroa Village leaders were finally successful in 2010 in gaining a Japanese grant for bulding a Community Learning Centre (CLC). Community Learning Centres enable graduates from government sponsored Rural Training Centres to return to their village and utilise the skills they have learnt through providing short training courses or sharing skills informally.
Andy Alderson from Eastgate Christian Centre, Pakuranga, Auckland, travelled to Toroa in 2010 to supervise the construction of the two storey CLC building which was completed, with the assistance of local people, during his stay of 7 weeks.
The upper storey of the CLC building has accomodation for up to 20 people, including toilets, showers and a lecture room. The ground level storey has a hall which can be used for larger gatherings. Since the completion of the CLC building, it has been used mainly for government-run block courses in a range of areas (e.g. carpentry, sewing, outboard maintenance, chainsaw maintenance) and NGO training programmes which serve people from many surrounding villages as well as Toroa. The Centre is also used for SSEC meetings and events.
